Icom IC-705

introduction
At 31 of august 2019 is the Icom IC-705 is introduced at the Toyko Hamfair 2019. This is a portable 10 Watt (QRP) FM/AM/SSB/DV/RTTY/CW rig whith 4,3" touchscreen, D-STAR, WLAN, Bluetooth, (fast/high resolution) realtime RF spectrum scope and much more! It'll transmit on HF, 6 m, 2 m and 70 cm! 70 Mhz/4 m isn't available on the rig. (The IC-7300 does have 4 meters built in...)

The IC-705 is a direct sampling SDR rig like the newest technology for good distortion reduction. (The Yaesu FT-817/FT-818 is a traditional superhytrodyne rig.) The Icom IC-705 is "the new Icom IC-703" (QRP version of the Icom IC-706). The IC-705 is the HF Icom IC-7300 and VHF/UHF IC-7900 combined, but low power portable version. Since it's designed for portable operation and weight and size is therefore relevant, there's no built in antenna tuner. (Which seems a logical choice.) Altough the rig is designed for field operations, the performance and functions are like a base station rig.

Nederlandse FCC goedkeuring

First experiences
My first experiences are very good! I like the rig very much.

frequency spectrum/waterfall
The frequency spectrum display and waterfall display is great. Note that the maximum span of the spectrum is 1 MHz. The boundaries of the spectrum can be set as desired within the 1 MHz limit. Therefore 144...145 MHz and 145...146 is possible. A smaller span is also possible.

weight and size
I like the size and weight. The rig is rather small, but large enough for convenient operation of the rig. The rig is relative heavy which I like. Too light rigs will move all the time when 'pulling' the microphone cord.

sd card fail
I had a lot of trouble with the repeated failure of the sd-card. This is common for other IC-705's I thought. I used an Kingstons 32 GB micro sd hc card which failed repeatedly when recording received audio. After a couple of minutes the recording stops after an sd-card failure message. The recording can be restarted. I contacted Amcom and they contacted Icom. After some research the problem is not the IC-705, but the Kingstons 32 GB micro sd hc card. I tested three new cards in two IC-705's and the result is the same. After swithing to another brand 8GB card, the problem is solved. Therefore the Kingstons 32 GB micro sd hc card is not recommended for the Ic-705!

D-STAR
The IC-705 is my first rig with D-STAR. The digital mode works great. Even with low power a stable contact is possible. The sound is a little distorted (like all the digital modes) ans sounds 'under water'. The great advantaged is that there's no noise burst after each reception which listens very convenient. Another nice option it the possibility of sending and receiving JPG pictures of 160x120, 320x240 or 640x480 pixels. For each resolution the quality can be set also. Since the transmission is digital, there's no quality loss. Each photo is 'cut' in a matrix and each small block is sent. The larger the size/quality, the longer the transmission takes. It's possible to transmit audio during transmission of the photo. When transmission during reception, the 'blocks' are lost and appear as black blocks. A test image is shown below. At first some blocks were lost since the power was very low and the distance was 6 kms. After setting the transmission power a littke higher, the image became stable as shown. The two black 'bars' show where I transmitted during reception of the image. When the power of the transmitting station is sufficient and when not transmitted during reception of the image, the quality is very good! A very good thing is that 'any' image can be sent. Just drag and drop a JPG image (of the exact pixel size) in the image folder of the sd-card and it works. You don't need a special camera microphone like you need for Yaesu equipment (...).

mounting
The rig is equipped with two types of mounting possibilities. There is one 1/4 threaded hole and four M4 holes in the AMPS standard configuration. The advantage of the AMPS mounting is that the mounting doesn't unscrew easily. I bought a RAM mount stand with two AMPS connecting plates and a medium size connection rod in between. The ball size is 'B'. This is a rather small type, but large enough for the size and weight of the rig. I highly recommend this type of stand. The rig is now stable and won't slide off the table pushing any button or pulling the microphone cord. I hate easy moving equipment. ;-)

'normal' 3,5 mm headset connector
A very big plus is that the microphone and speaker connectors are split. The small 2,5 mm type is used for the microphone and the 3,5 mm stereo mini jack is used for the speaker. The great advantage is that the microphone can be used as a microphone and a stereo headset can be used on the 3,5 mm audio out connector. This makes me very happy. Other portable transceiver are also equipped with 2,5 and 3,5 mm connectors, but the 2,5 mm connector is usually used for the speaker. Therefore always a converter cable is needed for using 'normal' headphones with 3,5 mm connectors. Smart thinking Icom!
